Trees for Congleton – Completed Sites

Salford Place

Description

Informal amenity green space which is partly enclosed by housing, but which leads to a network of footpaths and further green space including lengths of former hedgerow with mature hedgerow trees which date from when the area was still farmland.  A surfaced footpath links Solly Crescent with Newcastle Road.

In 2023 a mixed native hedge was planted along part of the roadside, together with 6 fruit trees planted on either side of the footpath, an individual lime tree, and an individual oak tree to commemorate the Coronation in May 2023 of King Charles III.  There is scope for future extension of the hedge, and for reduced mowing to encourage wild flowers and grasses for pollinators and other wildlife.  Planting was funded by the Tree Council.

Planting benefits

  • Partial separation of green space from traffic, filtering of air pollution
  • Carbon storage, shade and shelter to mitigate effects of climate change
  • Addition to green network, providing habitat, flowers and berries for wildlife
  • Orchard for food, amenity & wildlife
  • New oak tree could become a future veteran with even greater wildlife benefits

Management

Once new planting is established, generally after one year, it is handed over to Congleton Town Council’s Streetscape team which already looks after green spaces in the town.  Cheshire East Council (Ansa) may also be involved, working alongside our Town Council team. Fruit trees are pruned by volunteers. It is appreciated that many residents help by picking litter when visiting the green space.

It is intended that the hedge is maintained at around 1.2 m high, with sides trimmed only lightly, or in alternate years, to allow the hedge to thicken and flowers and berries to be produced.

Would you like to be a friend of Solly Cresant green space?

We would love local residents to become ‘friends’ of the trees and plants planted in the area. A ‘friend’ would keep an eye on the site and report any damage or problems, or indeed how the plants are flourishing!  As one of the Town Council’s 30 Biodiversity Sites any information on wildlife or suggestions for enhancement would be welcomed.  Please fill in the form below with your contact details and a member of the team will be in touch.
