Trees for Congleton – Completed Sites

Thames Close/Townsend Road

Description

Informal amenity green space with play area, sloping to the valley bottom where a brook once ran.  A surfaced path links Townsend Road and the town centre with Thames Close.  This green space contains many mature trees as well as areas of amenity planting dating from the late C20th. Large crack willows, alders and aspens are a feature of the valley bottom, with a former hedgerow oak, wild cherries, Norway maple, Scots pine, larch and other species on higher slopes.

Cheshire Wildlife Trust volunteers planted a line of lime trees alongside the path in 2021, and some flowering cherry trees were planted in a clearing in 2022 by Trees for Congleton to mark the Queen’s Jubilee, funded by Congleton Town Council.  Much of the site was once meadow and there is scope to reduce mowing in some areas to allow a variety of native wildflowers and grasses to flourish.

Planting benefits

  • Carbon storage, shade and shelter to mitigate effects of climate change
  • Addition to the green network, providing habitat, flowers and berries for wildlife
  • New significant trees contribute to a varied age structure.

Management

Once new planting is established, generally after one year, it is handed over to Congleton Town Council’s Streetscape team which already looks after green spaces in the town.  Cheshire East Council (Ansa) may also be involved, working alongside our Town Council team.  It is appreciated that many residents help by picking litter when visiting the green space.

Would you like to be a friend of Thames Close/Townsend Road green space?

We would love local residents to become ‘friends’ of the trees and plants planted in the area. A ‘friend’ would keep an eye on the site and report any damage or problems, or indeed how the plants are flourishing!  As one of the Town Council’s 30 Biodiversity Sites any information on wildlife or suggestions for enhancement would be welcomed.  Please fill in the form below with your contact details and a member of the team will be in touch.
