Trees for Congleton – Completed Sites
Ullswater Road/Holmes Chapel Road
Description
This site is on the end of one of the Highway grass verges that lie on either side of Holmes Chapel Road, in this case next to the junction with Ullswater Road, near Quinta School. In this area it is wide enough to form a useful green space, if it could be separated from the busy main road for safety. It contains two existing mature cherry trees and a beech in poor condition but is a glorious sight in spring when there are swathes of daffodils in flower.
New planting consisting of a mixed hawthorn, holly and beech hedge was carried out in 2023 by Trees for Congleton volunteers, funded by the Tree Council. There is scope for continuing the hedge planting and adding new trees to improve the age structure of the trees remaining along Holmes Chapel Road, where permitted (road sightlines etc need to be considered).
Planting benefits
- Separation of green space from traffic to improve safety, filter air pollution, prevent inconsiderate school-related parking
- Carbon storage to help mitigate effects of climate change
- Addition to green network, providing potential habitat for wildlife
Management
Once new planting is established, generally after one year, it is handed over to Congleton Town Council’s Streetscape team which already looks after green spaces in the town. Cheshire East Council (Ansa) may also be involved, working alongside our Town Council team. It is appreciated that many residents help by picking litter when visiting the green space.
It is intended that the hedge is maintained at around 1.2 m high, with sides trimmed annually. The side next to the road will need to be trimmed hard, but on the side facing the green space light trimming or trimming in alternate years will allow the hedge to thicken and flowers and berries to be produced.
Would you like to be a friend of Ullswater Road/Holmes Chapel green space?
We would love local residents to become ‘friends’ of the trees and plants planted in the area. A ‘friend’ would keep an eye on the site and report any damage or problems, or indeed how the plants are flourishing! Any information on wildlife or suggestions for enhancement would be welcomed. Please fill in the form below with your contact details and a member of the team will be in touch.
